How does COVID-19 testing work?

White Lake Family Medicine is committed to providing the health care services your family needs. The practice offers both telehealth and in-person appointments, along with in-office COVID-19 testing.

If you or a family member has been exposed to the coronavirus or shows symptoms of COVID-19, getting tested is the only way to confirm if you have the disease. White Lake Family Medicine offers standard PCR testing and rapid testing in the office. Appointments and in-office visits are required for COVID-19 testing.

COVID-19 PCR tests

PCR testing is considered the best way to diagnose COVID-19.

PCR tests use a nasal swab to detect the genetic material specific to the coronavirus. They’re particularly effective for people who were recently infected or who are asymptomatic.

Although PCR testing is very accurate, the sample is sent to a lab, and it can take a few days to a week to get results.

Rapid COVID-19 tests

If you need your test results quickly, in-office rapid testing could be a good option for you.

Rapid COVID-19 tests are nasal swabs that detect coronavirus protein fragments. In some cases, results are available in as little as 15 minutes. The clinic accepts cash payments for rapid COVID-19 testing.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

COVID-19 symptoms vary between demographics and individuals. In general, symptoms appear 2-14 days after exposure to the virus and can include:

  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • New loss of taste and/or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea

Anyone can have a mild to severe form of the disease, and it’s possible to have it without experiencing any symptoms. Older people and those with underlying conditions may be more likely to have severe symptoms.

If you or a family member shows signs of a medical emergency, go to the nearest hospital emergency room or call 911. Emergency warning signs include trouble breathing, pain in the chest, bluish lips, or inability to rouse.

When should I get COVID-19 testing?

Consider scheduling a COVID-19 test if you’ve been exposed to the virus or you’re experiencing symptoms that could indicate the disease. Remember that different people can exhibit different symptoms, so it’s important to stay home and get tested for COVID-19 if you’re feeling sick.

If you or a family member tests positive for COVID-19, follow all local guidelines for quarantining and social distancing to help limit the spread of the disease.
